Sustainability at Princeton

The GSG works with the Office of Sustainability, the Facilities Department, and other student groups (e.g., Greening Princeton) on sustainability issues. We are also members of the Princeton Sustainability Committee.

The University now uses commingled recycling for paper, plastic, and glass. The Office of Sustainability provides detailed information about what can be recycled. This applies to all University buildings and all University housing locations as we have a private recycling contract. Off-campus students in Princeton can find more information here.

Electronics/Computer recycling

The GSG is working with the University to provide recycling for computers and electronics, along with on-campus drop-off locations at graduate apartment complexes. Until this becomes available, the town of Princeton provides free recycling for computers, monitors, laptops, and televisions. Instructions are provided in this notice. All residents can also dispose of electronic and other hazardous household waste at events sponsored by Mercer County.

The GSG coordinates an annual furniture drive each year after Reunions when undergraduate seniors move out of their dorms. The seniors donate furniture and other items, which the GSG then resells to graduate students. The profits are donated to local charities.

We are also meeting with Building Services to make arrangements to improve the move-out process for graduate students. In particular we want to permit grad students to donate furniture and other large items when they move-out which can then be saved to sell or donate to new graduate students when they move in. We are investigating the feasibility of setting up storage locations at graduate housing locations.
