Wine Menu of the 2008 GSG Wine & Cheese Social
(Thirteen different wines from seven countries!)
Caracol Serrano Jumilla Tinto 2005 (Spain)
"The 2005 Caracol Serrano Joven is a blend of 50% Monastrell, 30% Syrah, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the latter component spending 3 months in French and American oak. Dark ruby-colored, it has an expressive nose of earth, herbs, mushroom and garrigue, as well as ripe blackberries. This hedonistic effort has gobs of ripe fruit and spicy flavors in its surprisingly full-bodied personality."
Argiolas Costamolino 2007 (Italy)
"Made from 90% Vermentino and 10% of other Sardinian grapes grown in the Costamolino vineyard, at an elevation of 625 feet. The grapes were harvested in September and vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation was partially carried out, allowing for greater elegance without sacrificing the typical freshness of Vermentino. Costamolino is straw yellow in color with green highlights and an intense yet delicate bouquet that displays distinct characteristics fo the variety."
Big Moose Red 2002 (US)
"A pleasing mix of ripe, tart fruit flavors that vary from strawberry and rhubarb to plum and apricot, with interesting hints of baking spices, mineral and violet nuances. Smooth and tasty. Syrah, Grenache and Petite Sirah."
Falesco Vitiano 2006 (Italy)
"The 2006 Vitiano Rosso is another intense, deeply flavored wine. This powerful effort bursts from the glass with an array of jammy plums, cherries, cassis, graphite and minerals. It will offer much pleasure now and over the next few years and is a terrific value for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010."
Pieve Del Vescovo Piovano 2004 (Italy)
"Great little wine from Umbria. This jazzy little guy needs 45 minutes to open and then POW! Loaded with classic red fruit this wine has a funny little finish that makes you want to drink more and more..."
Leocadie Cuvee Leukadios 2006 (France)
"Hard to believe there is still good European wine at this price, but it's true! This wonderful Cotes du Rhone style red is full of fruit and earthy undertones, with a pure, clean finish. Drink up over the next couple of years."
Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2006 (New Zealand)
"Pale lemon in colour, with green hues and brilliant clarity. A vibrant bouquet of citrus and tropical fruits, with hints of cut grass and capsicum. A wine of charm, elegance and style, the palate has excellent weight and mouthfeel. Showing concentrated tropical fruit flavours of grapefruit, lemon and pineapple, with layers of muted herbal characters. The crisp, balanced freshness of the palate extends into a lingering, refreshing finish.”
Protocolo Red (Spain)
"Made from 100% Tempranillo, this traditional red table wine from Spain is medium-bodied with flavors of black cherry with undertones of vanilla and oak."
Avalon Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (US)
"The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (50,000 cases produced) is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Syrah, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. Its dark ruby/plum color is followed by sweet aromas of black currants, smoke, damp earth, licorice, and spice. Medium-bodied and pure with silky tannins as well as a surprisingly long finish."
Heath Lizard Flat Chardonnay 2005 (Australia)
"Crisp in texture, offering generous orange cream and pear flavors that just don't quit as the finish rolls on and on. Cries out for food. Drink now. 20,000 cases made."
Campagnola Pinot Grigio (Italy)
"Incredible for the money! Clean, crisp and refreshing, this is an excellent value and a must try for anyone who loves Pinot Grigio. The soft citrus flavors and the creamy long finish make this our top choice for under $10 P.G."
Famega Vinho Verde 2007 (Portugal)
"Pleasant and mellow, this young white wine will be the perfect accompaniment to all kinds of seafood, salads, mild cheeses, as an aperitif or just by itself. The alcohol content of Famega is 9.5% which makes it the ideal natural low calorie white wine. The grapes used in making Famega are 100% Alvarinho (same as the Albarino grape over the border in northwest Spain."
Man Vintners Chenin Blanc (South Africa)
"The variety of South Africa. Fresh and minerally, with the slightest hint of sweetness, with notes of white peach and quince. Great with cheese or as an aperitif."
