2018 GSG Executive Offices

General overview:
While officers are expected to bring new ideas to the GSG, the GSG executive officers are elected to serve the GSG Assembly, not to pursue a personal agenda. The typical time commitment of an office is 3-6 hours per week, depending on the office. All officers are required to attend the monthly GSG Assembly meetings. Historically, all officers have worked collectively to perform the administrative and advocacy work of the GSG; this typically includes a weekly meeting with the other officers and occasional meetings with University administrators.

No prior involvement in the GSG is required to hold an officer position, and the Election Committee encourages all interested students to run for a position. All full-time enrolled Princeton graduate students (DCE students qualify), including degree students, non-degree students, and leave-of-absence students who were enrolled the previous year are eligible to run for a position. ETDCC students can also run, but only if they have paid the student government fee (for more information, contact the elections committee).

Housing incentive:
The Graduate School and the Housing office provide priority in the housing draw for the GSG Officers. The Officers will be given priority just below the residential committees (Lakeside Committee, Lawrence Committee, GC House Committee) and before other students. This will ensure that, as an enrolled student (including students in DCE), you will be successful in housing and will have a higher lottery number for getting a room/apartment assignment. These incentives serve both as a reward for serving the graduate student body and to assist officers in performing their duties (easier travel to meetings, living with other student in campus housing, etc). They come with the expectation that you will perform all the duties of your elected role and participate fully in the GSG. Any officer who is not adequately performing their duties risks being removed from office or having the privileges taken away. These incentives may change from year to year at the discretion of the GSG, Graduate School, Housing Office, and/or Parking Office.

Specific Offices:
The President is the leader of the GSG. You are usually the first person the administration will e-mail with questions. You will also be asked to represent graduate students at University events, on various committees, and to Princeton alumni.

The Vice President keeps the GSG meetings running smoothly. You are responsible for making sure that each department/program sends representatives to the GSG Assembly.

The Vice President for Internal Affairs provides internal support for the internal activities of the GSG executive committee. You are responsible for keeping track of ongoing projects, committees, and appointments, as well as generally supporting the work of the President and Vice President.

The Communications Director manages communication among the GSG, the administration, and the graduate student body. You are responsible for coordinating the updates to the GSG website and for responding to e-mails sent to our gsg@princeton address. You are also in charge of maintaining contact with campus and local media.

The Secretary maintains the records of the GSG. You are in charge of taking minutes at our monthly Assembly meetings.

The Treasurer maintains the financial records and the budget. You will also chair the GSG Events Board, which provides funds to independent student groups.

The Special Events officer coordinates and organizes GSG quarterly parties, including GSG Wine & Cheese.

The Academic Affairs officer is responsible for (1) investigating and advocating for interdisciplinary and cross­-departmental academic initiatives, (2) investigating and advocating for interdisciplinary and cross­-departmental academic funding, including but not limited to fellowships, research grants, and academic travel grants, (3) investigating and advocating for library facilities and library services for graduate students, including both physical and electronic facilities, (4) studying and reporting on the status of students who are not in regular enrollment, (5) advocating on behalf of students who are not in regular enrollment, and (6) advocating for department­ specific and multi­-department issues including (i) funding, (ii) stipends, (iii) mentoring, and (iv) the availability of a list of departmental “best practices”, and (7) overseeing the Graduate Writing Days (GWD) program, including hiring and providing direction to the GWD manager.

The Facilities officer is responsible for (1) performing advocacy for graduate student parking and transportation needs and oversight of the GSG’s responsibilities in connection with the University shuttle system, (2) working with the Housing Office and Graduate School for the continual improvement of processes related to graduate student housing, (3) working with the residential committees on issues of housing and maintenance, (4) performing advocacy for housing construction, renovation, and maintenance, as well as residential services provided by the University, (5) performing advocacy on the subject of rents, (6) addressing any projects or programs to assist graduate students in finding affordable and convenient housing, (7) working with the Office of Information Technology on issues concerning graduate students, (8) studying and reporting on computing facilities, University computer systems, programs and services dealing with computers or computing, the campus network, University electronic records, and security and privacy concerns associated with any of these subjects, (9) performing advocacy on issues of dining on­campus (including the Graduate College), (10) performing advocacy on issues of campus sustainability, and (11) performing advocacy on these and related issues.

The Health & Life officer is responsible for (1) studying and publicizing health care options for members of the graduate student body, (2) performing advocacy within the University for improvement in health care and insurance options, services, and benefits for members of the graduate student body, (3) seeking, negotiating, and publicizing external discounts or other health care benefits for graduate students, (4) studying and addressing the challenges faced by graduate students with minor children or other dependents, (5) working with Public Safety to address concerns regarding safety on campus, at the graduate housing units, and while using University transportation, and (6) advocating for improvements to athletics and athletics facilities.

The Social officer is charged with (1) organizing and running small, ongoing or recurrent social events for the graduate student community, (2) assisting the Special Events Chair in organizing and running large social events and parties of the GSG, and (3) maintaining a relationship between the GSG and the various graduate student clubs and societies, and assisting these individuals and societies to run their events.
